Finding the path of totality is only half the job. The total solar eclipse in Spain on August 12, 2026 happens so close to sunset that a hill, building or badly chosen coastline could block the moment you came to see.

The path of totality crosses Spain from west to east. IGN lists A Coruña, Oviedo, León, Bilbao, Zaragoza, Valencia and Palma among the provincial capitals crossed by the totality band. Almost all of Spain's northern half lies within or near that path.
Inside the band, the Moon completely covers the Sun's bright face. The sky darkens, and the solar corona becomes visible for a short time.
Outside the band, you'll see a partial eclipse. The difference matters. Obscuration describes how much of the Sun's visible surface is covered by the Moon. A location can have extremely high obscuration and still miss complete totality.
Madrid city is one example. The city itself sits outside full totality, but the northern part of the Community of Madrid enters the band.

Barcelona city is also outside totality. Its eclipse is partial, with maximum eclipse occurring at about 20:29 local time. Parts of Catalonia farther south do enter the totality band.
There isn't one perfect viewing city. A longer totality sounds tempting. But a 100-second eclipse behind cloud is still a missed eclipse.
The better choice balances totality, historical cloud patterns, solar altitude, horizon visibility and access.
A Coruña gets totality relatively early in the Spanish crossing. IGN gives 76 seconds of totality, with the Sun around 12° above the horizon. That extra height gives you more room for nearby terrain than locations farther east.
The trade-off is weather. Northwestern Spain has historically had more cloud than several inland parts of the path.
León is one of the strongest choices if you want an organised eclipse experience.
Current eclipse calculations give the city about 1 minute 45 seconds of totality, with maximum eclipse around 20:29 local time.

You'll still need a clear western view. The low Sun means nearby trees and buildings can get in the way.
Burgos makes a strong case if you care about both totality length and historical weather.
IGN gives the city 104 seconds of totality, with the Sun around 8° high. Inland areas of Castile and León have also shown more favourable historical sky conditions than parts of the Cantabrian coast.
That doesn't mean Burgos will be clear. It means its climate history gives it a useful planning advantage.
Zaragoza combines full totality with the services of a large city.
Current calculations put maximum eclipse around 20:29, with totality lasting about 1 minute 25 seconds.
The catch is the Sun's height. It will be very low, so a clear western line of sight matters more than picking the exact centre of the eclipse path.
Valencia city is inside the totality zone. Maximum eclipse comes around 20:33, with about 1 minute of totality.
Sunset follows soon afterwards. That makes location choice tricky. Don't assume a Mediterranean beach automatically gives the best view.
The Sun will be toward the west, which may put inland terrain behind your viewing direction.
Mallorca gets totality too, but Palma shows how extreme the sunset geometry becomes.
IGN says maximum eclipse in Palma occurs at around 20:32, with the Sun only about 2° above the horizon.
Two degrees is tiny. A distant ridge, hotel or tree line can hide the Sun. Check your viewing point before eclipse evening.
Across Spain, totality begins in different places between roughly 20:26 and 20:33 CEST.

IGN provides the official A Coruña, Burgos and Palma timing data. Current city calculations also confirm totality in León, Zaragoza and Valencia.

IGN's weather guidance uses AEMET data to study typical conditions inside the eclipse path. It warns that these figures are historical guidance, not an eclipse-day forecast.
The Cantabrian coast has historically faced more cloud risk than many inland areas.
Parts of Castile and León and the Ebro Valley tend to offer better historical conditions. Local mountains can still create cloud through rising air and afternoon heating.
So should you automatically pick Burgos over A Coruña?No. Climate data helps weeks or months ahead. Once the eclipse gets close, live weather matters more.
Check more than one candidate location. Then check again the night before and on eclipse morning.
A sensible move based on a clear forecast can save your viewing plan. A desperate cross-country drive through eclipse traffic probably won't.

Catalonia itself does cross the totality band, so travellers who want the full eclipse need to move south into the appropriate zone or choose another city inside the path.
Zaragoza is another totality option for travellers who already have workable transport arrangements. Don't leave your return plan until after the eclipse.
IGN suggests waiting for traffic to thin where possible. That advice fits this particular night rather well because the eclipse also falls close to the Perseid meteor shower peak.
Wear proper solar-viewing protection whenever any part of the bright Sun remains visible.
Normal sunglasses aren't safe. Safe eclipse viewers should meet the ISO 12312-2 international standard.
Spanish eclipse guidance recommends looking for the marking EN ISO 12312-2:2015 and, for products sold in the EU, authentic CE conformity.
Check your glasses before using them. Don't use a viewer with scratched, torn, loose or damaged filters.

Don't rush away the second the Sun sets. IGN points out that the 2026 eclipse falls close to the Perseid meteor shower maximum.
