New York City Marathon 2026: Date, Route & Travel Guide

Seeing your runner at mile 8 is easy. Seeing them again before mile 18 is where the New York subway map suddenly matters.

The 2026 TCS New York City Marathon takes place on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Around 60,000 runners are expected to tackle 26.2 miles across Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan.

This year also marks 50 years since the marathon first adopted its famous five-borough course.

For runners, race weekend starts well before the cannon fires. There's an Expo to visit, transport to Fort Wadsworth to sort out and a start wave to check.

Spectators have their own puzzle. Where should you watch? How do you beat your runner across Manhattan? And where do you meet after the finish when tens of thousands of people have the same idea?

New York Road Runners

New York Road Runners, better known as NYRR, organises the race. The route runs through all five New York City boroughs before finishing in Central Park.

When Is the New York City Marathon 2026?

The New York City Marathon 2026 is on Sunday, November 1.

The race traditionally takes place on the first Sunday in November. This edition carries extra weight because it celebrates the 50th anniversary of the five-borough course.

That version of the race first appeared in 1976. Before then, the marathon was largely confined to Central Park.

Interest is huge this year. NYRR says more than 240,000 people from over 160 countries applied for the 2026 general drawing.

Only about 1% were accepted through that drawing. So yes, getting a place can be harder than running the thing.

How Do You Enter the New York City Marathon 2026?

The main New York City Marathon registration 2026 window has already closed.

Applications for the non-guaranteed general drawing ran from February 4 through February 25. Successful applicants were selected on March 4.

NYRR uses several entry routes, though most aren't last-minute tickets you can simply buy.

What if you're coming from outside the US?

International runners should pay particular attention to Official International Tour Operators.

NYRR allows non-full-time US residents to book packages through approved tour operators. These packages can include guaranteed marathon entry plus a hotel or flight.

Availability depends on the operator and country. Check NYRR's current approved operator list before paying anyone claiming to sell guaranteed entry.

How Much Does the New York City Marathon Cost?

There's no useful single number for the total cost of running New York.

Your official race entry is only one part of the bill. International runners may also be paying for flights, a New York hotel, insurance, local transport, food and possibly an International Tour Operator package.

Charity runners may have a fundraising commitment on top of the race fee. That's why comparing the marathon purely by entry fee can be misleading.

Someone flying from London, Dubai or Sydney can easily spend far more on the weekend than on the bib itself.

Check your exact registration fee inside NYRR or your approved entry provider before paying. Fees and package prices depend on how you entered.

What Is the New York City Marathon 2026 Route?

The New York City Marathon route covers 26.2 miles, or 42.195 km, through all five boroughs.

It begins at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island and wastes no time making an entrance. Runners head almost immediately onto the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge toward Brooklyn.

From there, New York slowly unfolds.

NYRR confirms that the official course passes through Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan.

Where does the NYC Marathon start and finish?

The race starts at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island. It finishes in Central Park in Manhattan.

That geographical gap matters if you're supporting a runner. Don't plan your race day as though the start and finish are within easy walking distance. They're not.

What Time Does the NYC Marathon Start?

Most recreational runners start in one of several waves rather than at one single time. Your exact assignment appears on your official race bib.

NYRR's current general-wave schedule is:

Wave

Start Time

Wave 1

9:10 a.m.

Wave 2

9:45 a.m.

Wave 3

10:20 a.m.

Wave 4

10:55 a.m.

Wave 5

11:30 a.m.

You must start in your assigned wave and corral. NYRR allows runners to move to a later, slower group but not an earlier or faster one.

Running with a friend who has a later assignment? You can both move back to the later wave rather than trying to move them forward.

Check your bib and NYRR dashboard before race weekend in case anything changes.

NYC Marathon Expo 2026 and Bib Pickup

Race weekend starts at the TCS New York City Marathon Expo Presented by New Balance, not on Sunday morning.

The 2026 Expo takes place from October 29 to October 31 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Centre. You'll find it on 11th Avenue between West 35th and West 36th Streets.

Runners have to collect their own race materials. Bring a photo ID and your runner confirmation form.

No friend pickup. No hotel concierge. No sending your partner because you're tired after the flight. NYRR doesn't allow proxy collection.

Registered runners choose a pickup slot through their NYRR dashboard. NYRR currently allows Expo slot changes until 4:00 p.m. ET on October 31.

The closest subway station is 34th Street-Hudson Yards on the 7 train. Coming through Penn Station also works. It's served by the 1, 2, 3, A, C and E subway lines plus several rail services.

How Do Runners Get to the NYC Marathon Start?

Getting to Staten Island deserves more planning than opening a rideshare app at 6 a.m.

NYRR offers official transportation to Fort Wadsworth. For 2026, runners selected their transportation method between August 25 and September 8. That selection window has now closed.

If you missed the deadline, NYRR says you may receive a transportation assignment at the Expo. Options will be limited.

Official transport options include

  1. Staten Island Ferry from Whitehall Terminal in Manhattan
  2. Midtown Manhattan bus from the New York Public Library area
  3. New Jersey bus from MetLife Stadium
  4. Separate arrangements for some charity, tour operator and accessibility groups

The Staten Island Ferry route takes about 90 minutes in total, including the bus transfer from St. George Terminal. The ferry itself is free.

NYRR particularly recommends the ferry for runners expecting to finish in four hours or more.

Private cars sound easier than they are. Road closures create headaches, there's no parking at the start, and private drop-offs sit outside Fort Wadsworth.

Race morning isn't the day to improvise. One more detail catches people out: you can't check a bag at the start and have it transported to the finish.

The separate bag pre-check process took place before race weekend selections closed.

Best Places to Watch the New York City Marathon

Here's the spectator mistake that looks clever on paper: trying to see your runner four or five times.

Don't. Pick two strong viewing points and leave enough time to move between them. Packed platforms, closed streets and long station exits chew through a timetable fast.

NYRR says the subway is the best way for spectators to move around the course.

Seeing the closing miles

A Brooklyn sighting followed by Manhattan is usually more realistic than repeatedly racing the runner between boroughs.

Can you watch from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge?

No. NYRR doesn't allow spectator viewing at the start or on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

The majority of the course becomes accessible to spectators from roughly mile 3 onward.

If you want to see the opening, watch the broadcast and catch your runner later.

How to Track a Runner During the NYC Marathon

Use the official NYRR App developed by Tata Consultancy Services for runner tracking.

Once tracking becomes available, find your runner and follow their progress. Knowing their expected position can save you from spending 40 minutes staring at identical singlets.

But don't treat the tracker like radar. Mobile tracking can lag. Crowded networks can be messy too.

Use it as a guide, then give yourself time to reach the curb before your runner arrives. Agree on a post-race meeting point before Sunday morning.

A vague message like "meet me near Central Park" won't feel clever once thousands of people are leaving the finish area.

And keep the runner's bib number saved somewhere easy to reach.

How to Watch the New York City Marathon on TV or Online

Can't make it to the course? The 2026 race has local, national and international viewing options.

NYRR currently lists WABC-TV Channel 7 for live New York coverage from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. ET. Pre-race coverage starts at 7:00 a.m., with extended local coverage continuing until 1:00 p.m.

ABC7NY.com and the ABC 7 New York app are also scheduled to carry live coverage. Nationally, ESPN2 is listed for live coverage from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. ET. Spanish-language coverage is scheduled through ESPN3.

Current international partners include Eurosport in much of Europe, L'Equipe in France, RAI in Italy, TVE in Spain and TV Asahi in Japan.

Some markets remain listed as TBD. Check the official NYRR broadcast page close to November 1 because international rights can change.

Race-Day Travel Tips for International Visitors

New York on marathon Sunday doesn't behave like New York on a normal Sunday.

Road closures alter traffic. Trains fill with runners and supporters. Phone batteries disappear surprisingly fast when you're checking maps, photos, group chats, and live tracking all morning.

If you're planning a wider New York trip around marathon weekend, check the best time to visit New York City for seasonal travel tips.

A few choices make the day much easier:

  1. Use the subway instead of planning race-day trips by car
  2. Check MTA service changes before leaving your hotel
  3. Download an offline map as a backup
  4. Save your hotel's full address in your phone
  5. Screenshot tickets, reservations and key race information
  6. Install and sign into the NYRR app before race morning
  7. Carry a charged power bank and cable
  8. Agree on one exact post-race meeting point
  9. Save the runner's bib number and expected pace
  10. Keep mobile data working between Wi-Fi stops

NYRR also advises spectators to check current MTA information before travelling. And here's one small thing people underestimate: getting separated.

One person exits the wrong subway entrance. Another gets pushed farther down the sidewalk. Suddenly you're standing four blocks apart with no idea where the other person went.

A specific meeting point and working phone data fix a lot of unnecessary drama.

How to Stay Connected During the NYC Marathon With a Yaalo eSIM

You don't need an eSIM to visit New York. But international roaming can make ordinary marathon-day phone use surprisingly expensive.

A travel eSIM gives you another option. You can install a Yaalo USA eSIM before leaving home, then switch to its mobile data when you arrive.

That means your phone can stay useful for NYRR tracking, Google Maps, MTA updates, WhatsApp messages, restaurant bookings and getting back to your hotel.

Current Yaalo USA plans start from $2.78 for 1 GB valid for three days, with other fixed-data and unlimited options listed. Prices can change, so check the live plan page before buying.

If you prefer a physical SIM, see our guide on getting a SIM card in New York for local options, prices and where to buy one.

Check that your phone supports eSIM and isn't carrier-locked before buying.

If you're travelling with your normal SIM still installed, dual-SIM support can also let you keep your regular number available while using the Yaalo eSIM for data.

What Happens After the Finish?

Finishing in Central Park doesn't mean you'll instantly appear beside your family.

Runners have to move through the post-finish area first, and the surrounding streets become crowded. That's another reason to choose an exact reunion point before the race.

If you still have energy left, NYRR is also holding its official Victory Lap after-party on November 1 from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at Terminal 5.

Current ticket prices are $30 for NYRR members and $35 for non-members, plus processing fees. It's a 21-and-over event, and friends or family can attend too.

Whether your legs agree to that plan is another matter.

Conclusion

The New York City Marathon rewards planning before your shoes ever touch Staten Island.

Know your Expo slot. Check your transport assignment. Pick two spectator locations rather than six.

And decide exactly where everyone will meet after Central Park. If you're flying in from abroad, sort out phone data before takeoff too.

A Yaalo USA eSIM can be installed on compatible phones over Wi-Fi, leaving you ready for runner tracking, subway updates, maps and post-race messages when you land.

Then Sunday can be about the race. As it should be.
